The Juneau Board of Education believes that "the process of adopting and implementing educational policies should be shared with those who are most directly affected by those policies, i.e., the students, parents, citizens, support staff, teachers and administration of each school community. To foster and educational climate that is more conducive to student learning and academic success, to encourage creative, local, approaches to problem-solving, to provide parents and communities with the means to have a more effective voice in the education of their children (and to bear greater responsibility for educational success), the Board of Education established a process of decentralized school governance known as site-based decision making." (Board Policy 8140)

In order to implement this policy the Board directed the Superintendent to establish site councils at each school that broadly represents the school community.

The Sayéik Gastineau Site Council meets from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month in the Gastineau Elementary School Library.
